The “United Nations Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT)” is using NEST to process SAR imagery in emergency situations like the current floods in Pakistan. Please see www.unosat.org or www.unitar.org/unosat for our latest analysis and maps. UNITAR is our “mother” institute, that is why we call our programme sometimes as: “UNITAR’S OPERATIONAL SATELLITE APPLICATIONS PROGRAMME (UNOSAT)”. We are hosted by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland.

The Microwave Remote Sensing Group (www.ipf.tuwien.ac.at/radar/) of the Vienna University of Technology is using NEST for processing tens of thousands of SAR datasets into various map projections for global coverage. From this global coverage they are deriving a Global Backscatter Model for C-band SAR, characterising the entire global land surface at a 1 km resolution. The Global Backscatter Model has been used to simulate SAR acquisitions in support of Sentinel-1 system performance evaluation. The model has been developed within the Sigma Nought Statistics over Land Activity, financed by the European Space Agency (ESA).
